چکیده

ABSTRACT: Numerical simulations using continuum mechanics and elasto-plasticity are often used in geotechnical design. Determination of collapse loads may be part of such simulations. However, non-associated flow rules applied to frictional materials normally provide lower collapse loads than stated by classical methods. Should we stick to the classical solutions for design or should we rather trust the numerically obtained solutions? Non-associated plasticity is attractive when observed soil behaviour in conventional laboratory tests shall be reproduced. In this paper example simulations are made by the computer program PLAXIS showing lower failure loads for non-associated plasticity than the classical solutions. Well accepted theories for material instability using non-associated plasticity may explain the discrepancy, Rudnicki and Rice (1975). The instability implies bifurcations, zero stiffness modes and localized deformation in shear bands. The illustrations in this paper are focusing more on the physical collapse mechanisms than the mathematical singularities. The paper encourages a discussion on the practical consequences of using non-associated flow rules. The problem is of growing relevance since failure margins increasingly often are estimated using commercial finite element codes.

Water Flooding Performance Evaluation Using Percolation Theory

Water flooding is a well-known secondary mechanism for improving oil recovery. Conventional approach to evaluate the performance of a water flooding process (e.g. breakthrough and post breakthrough behavior) is to establish a reliable geological reservoir model, upscale it, and then perform flow simulations. To evaluate the uncertainty in the breakthrough time or post breakthrough behavior, thi...

A New Load-Flow Method in Distribution Networks based on an Approximation Voltage-Dependent Load model in Extensive Presence of Distributed Generation Sources

Power-flow (PF) solution is a basic and powerful tool in power system analysis. Distribution networks (DNs), compared to transmission systems, have many fundamental distinctions that cause the conventional PF to be ineffective on these networks. This paper presents a new fast and efficient PF method which provides all different models of Distributed Generations (DGs) and their operational modes...

Optimal Power Flow in the Smart Grid Using Direct Load Control Program

This paper proposes an Optimal Power Flow (OPF) algorithm by Direct Load Control (DLC) programs to optimize the operational cost of smart grids considering various scenarios based on different constraints. The cost function includes active power production cost of available power sources and a novel flexible load curtailment cost associated with DLC programs. The load curtailment cost is based ...

Numerical simulation of effect of non-spherical particle shape and bed size on hydrodynamics of packed beds

Fluid flow has a fundamental role in the performance of packed bed reactors. Some related issues, such as pressure drop, are strongly affected by porosity, so non-spherical particles are used in industry for enhancement or creation of the desired porosity. In this study, the effects of particle shape, size, and porosity of the bed on the hydrodynamics of packed beds are investigated with three ...

A Study on Combination of von Mises and Tresca Yield Loci In Non-Associated Viscoplasticity

In this study a non-associated viscoplastic flow rule (NAVFR) with combining von Mises and Tresca loci in place of yield and plastic potential functions and vice verse is presented. With the aid of fully implicit time stepping scheme and discussing the other studies on plastic potential flow rules and also experimental results it is shown that the proposed NAVFR can be adopted to forecast the e...
